What do you do with the tea left in the pot?

I have two tea pots, big and small for English tea. Sometimes the small one is not big enough and the big one is too big as it does not help the second pouring for the company. I konw I should adjust the amount of boiled water, but I often fail it as I rarely use the big one and I add some extra boiled water in the pot after the first serving.
The other day, a lady told me that what I did with the tea left in the pot is a don’t. She also said that I should throw it away and make a fresh tea. It would be the best way but why can’t you add hot water in the pot? You can add hot water in the tea when it is strong for you.
Please tell me what you do with the tea left in the pot.
