What was Antonio Pigafetta’s Seilani/Ceylon?
Ceylon was also the name of what we now name as Sumatra. But this particular island was in the Philippines and is mentioned in Antonio Pigafetta’s eyewitness account of the first circumnavigation of the globe.
In 1521, Pigafetta determined that the whole Leyte area of the Philipines is composed of islands: some are Cenalo, Hiunanghan, Abarien, Ceylon and Baibai. Pigafetta’s Ceylon which is Francisco Albo’s Seilani and which is Maximilian Transylvanus’s Selani is today’s Panaon Island at 10°2′N and 125°13′E.
